Before you enter the fabulous dome hall, Charles Square’s beautiful atmosphere and the visually stunning St. Charles’s Church will enchant you. A few other important cultural attractions like the Vienna Secession, the Vienna Künstlerhaus and the Museum of Vienna await. In 1784 Emperor Joseph II opened the old general hospital of Vienna. Part of the hospital was the Narrenturm, the first hospital for mental ill patients in Vienna. As architecture is concerned, the tower is a circular building with a square in the centre. The square building was inhabited by female and male nurses, a doctor and the doorman.

The Narrenturm has five floors, each with 28 cells. The cells were occupied by one or two people at most and furnished with bed, table, chair and toilet. In 1784, this was quite modern, thanks to Joseph II who was very engaged in the welfare system and gave instructions to put only two people at most in one cell. The building was used as a lunatic asylum until the year 1866 when it was closed and the patients transferred to other institutions. In 1869 the last patient left and from that time on the Narrenturm was used as storage rooms and workshops for the general hospital. At the beginning of the 20th century, a home for nurses was established in the former asylum which was used until 1993.

In 1971, the Pathological-anatomical collection was moved in free rooms of the Narrenturm and since the last nurses and doctors moved out in 1993 the whole building is now used for the collection. The Pathological-anatomical collection was founded in 1796 as part of the Pathological-anatomical Institute for the use of doctors and students alike. The Narrenturm now houses more than 50.000 preparations, most of them wet preparations but also bones and wax casts, so called moulages and is now one of the largest collections of its kind in the world.

Once you visit Vienna, doing some waltz dancing should definitely be part of your social program. You think Viennese Waltz is hard to learn, something for professional dancers only? As you will see, it is not! We will show you an easy version of Viennese waltz, and it doesn’t take longer than a few minutes to get the hang of.

Together, we will start with the very basics, step by step, with clear and simple instructions and enough time to repeat and recollect the pattern of steps and the posture. Beginning with a relaxingly slow pace, only gradually getting faster, you will be surprised that soon you’ll be able to catch up with the vibrant and rousing ¾ time of the Viennese Waltz in full tempo.

For those interested, there will be a little additional information on the history of the dance and the classic waltz music as well. As our location is in one of the most famous buildings on Vienna’s Ringstraße, we will then, once the steps work out, savor the atmosphere of lavish architecture and vivid dancing music. After all, these are the very ingredients of Vienna’s imperial ballroom tradition!
